Dental Considerations for Patients Taking Gabapentinoid (gabapentin/pregabalin)
Important — second opinion only. DentiCision provides an evidence-based second opinion to assist the dentist. It does not replace the treating dentist's professional clinical judgment or consultation with the patient's physician. The treating dentist retains full clinical, scientific and legal responsibility. Always verify drugs and doses against current guidelines.
Avoid opioids & sedative stacking (gabapentinoid)
Record of gabapentinoid. The points below cover relevant oral side-effects and drug interactions so prescribing and treatment remain safe and non-conflicting.
Emergency vs routine management
If EMERGENCY — what to do
- • Do not delay emergency treatment — proceed with urgent care while applying the modifications listed above.
If ROUTINE — what to do
- • Proceed with routine care once the listed precautions, labs or timing checks are satisfied.
- • Book at the most suitable time and keep appointments short where advised.
Clinical precautions
- • Avoid opioid analgesics (codeine, tramadol) and avoid stacking sedatives — additive CNS and respiratory depression (FDA / MHRA warnings).
- • Dizziness and drowsiness common — raise the chair slowly; an escort is advisable if sedation is used.
- • May cause dry mouth — caries prevention advice.
- • Avoid prescribing drugs that interact; verify any new prescription against the patient's full medication list.
Medications to avoid → safer alternative
- Opioid analgesics — codeine, tramadol, dihydrocodeineParacetamol ± ibuprofen (if no NSAID contraindication)
