Emergency vs routine management
If EMERGENCY — what to do
- • Do not delay emergency treatment — proceed with urgent care while applying the modifications listed above.Ref: Ross DS et al. 2016 American Thyroid Association Guidelines for Diagnosis and Management of Hyperthyroidism. Thyroid 2016;26:1343–1421

- • Book at the most suitable time and keep appointments short where advised.Ref: Ross DS et al. 2016 American Thyroid Association Guidelines for Diagnosis and Management of Hyperthyroidism. Thyroid 2016;26:1343–1421
Clinical precautions
- • Sore throat, mouth ulcers, fever or new infection → urgent FBC (ANC) and inform the physician; defer surgery if ANC <1.0 ×10⁹/L
- • Propylthiouracil: hepatotoxicity — use paracetamol at reduced dose
- • Also add Hyperthyroidism to record control status
